MSU Police Identify Suspect in Saturday Night Sexual Assault

Comments Off

On Saturday night an 18-year-old MSU student told police that she was sexually assaulted by a stranger in Armstrong Hall. Now police have identified a suspect, but students at the residence hall are still shaken by the incident and argue that measures should be taken to protect another assault from happening.

According to several students living at Armstrong, the building is unlocked during the day and anyone can walk in. Police say that the Saturday night assault happened between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 11:40 p.m., right before the doors get locked. After midnight, the doors are locked and students must check in with the front desk and show their I.D. But students say that they would like a "swiping system" instead, where students must swipe an I.D. card to get in. MSU police say that such a system will be installed shortly.

Nevertheless, the suspect hasn’t been arrested yet and the investigation is ongoing. Unfortunately, sexual assault on campuses across the nation is not a totally uncommon occurence. The American Association of University Women cites statistics that between 20-25% of women will experience rape or an attempted rape during their college career.
