As early as 2014, numerous Sparrow officials knew of Dr. Allard’s misconduct, abhorrent behavior, and unsanitary medical practices. In 2014 Carson Hospital received complaints against Dr. Raymond Allard’s conduct. A surgical assistant who had a long time relationship with Dr. Allard was discharged from employment upon complaining to Sparrow Carson Hospital regarding sexual harassment claims against the doctor. The surgical assistant filed in 2014 a complaint with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights that she was discriminated against because of her gender and weight.
The 100-page report depicts Sparrow Carson Hospital’s CEO Matt Thompson knew of Dr. Allard’s behavior and misconduct. Dr. Allard was known for making derogatory statements about fellow employees in the presence of patients as well as commenting on patient’s conditions or their physique. At least three other complaints regarding Dr. Allard 2014, 2015, and 2016 have been identified as submitted to the state but the details are sealed.
Ilene Cantor, vice president for marketing and communications at Sparrow Health System was unable to comment regarding the 2014 allegations citing “confidential legal matter”.
Sparrow Health System and Sparrow Carson Hospital must take action in providing a safe work place environment free of sexual harassment and discrimination to its employees and patients. If suspected misconduct or unsafe practices are denoted then it is the responsibility of Sparrow to investigate such claims in a manner appropriate within Sparrow’s mission statement/philosophy: “To improve the health of the people in our communities by providing quality, compassionate care to everyone, every time”.
