Mason—four people were transported to Sparrow Hospital as a result of a late-afternoon crash on Thursday between a freight train and pickup truck near the intersection of Kipp and Hull roads. According to police, a man, woman, and two children were all in the pickup truck at the time of the accident. The man was airlifted to Sparrow Hospital in serious condition, while the woman and two children were taken via ambulance.

Police are unsure why the truck was on the train tracks and are investigating the accident that occurred shortly before 4 p.m. Tami Chapman, who was driving west toward the train crossing at the time of the crash, said she heard the train signals and whistles before the flashers began to work. Furthermore, she said that the pickup truck involved in the crash was also headed westbound and swerved around her after she had slammed on her brakes. Consequently, the truck continued onto the train tracks, collided with the train, and rolled over four times before it was pushed off of the tracks.

The crash left the extended-cab pickup upside down about 100 feet past where the train tracks cross Kipp Road. According to police, the intersection is equipped with warning lights and bells, but no crossing gates. While the woman was able to climb out of the demolished truck on her own, emergency crews used handsaws to remove parts of the truck to get to the severely injured man. The conditions of the woman and children are still unknown.
