At approximately 8 a.m. Monday, a Waverly School District bus was struck from behind near the intersection of West Michigan Avenue and Western Avenue in Lansing Township. Two children received minor injuries as a result of the crash. According to early reports, the school bus was stopped with its red lights flashing when it was rear-ended. The other driver reportedly told police that bright sunlight made it difficult for her to see the school bus.
Fortunately, it appears that everyone will emerge from this accident okay. However, this is an unfortunate reminder that school is back in session and kids will be traveling on foot, bike, bus, and car to reach their respective places of learning. Motorists must stop their vehicles at least 20 feet from a school bus that has its red lights flashing and remain stopped until the signal is turned off. In addition, drivers should be on the look out for children getting on or off the bus. Kids of all ages, but particularly younger children, may enter the street at unexpected points or emerge from between parked vehicles.
If you are traveling during a time of day when students are likely to be out, be alert. Keep this back to school season safe for everyone.
