Around this time last year, Adam Nevells’ life was cut short in a tragic car accident. 18-year-old Nevells was a well-liked student at Okemos High School, where he wrestled, played saxophone in the marching band, and was the captain of the water polo team. Just a few hours after one of the first football games of the season at the high school, Nevells was pulling out of the parking lot and was struck by a 21-year-old man in a pickup truck. A few days later Nevells died from his injuries.
Thankfully, Nevells’ family may finally see some justice: the 22-year-old man suspected of causing the accident, Valeriano Acosta-Bautista, was arrested on Tuesday night. Subsequently, Acosta-Bautista was arraigned on Wednesday night on a charge of driving with a license suspended, revoked or denied, causing death. He’s currently being held at the Ingham County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
The accident occured on September 2, 2009 at around 11:20 p.m. when Nevells returned to the high school parking lot to pick up his car that was left there earlier. As he was pulling out of the parking lot on to Jolly Road, a pickup truck struck him. According to the Meridian Township police Lt. Greg Frenger, Acosta-Bautista was driving without a license at the time of the accident.
