Just ahead of a busy holiday season, Fresh Express is expanding its recall of pre-packaged salad products over concerns about Listeria. The salad packages were initially recalled in the US earlier this week, and the recall has now been expanded to include Canada. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the action was prompted when the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development tested a random sample package and discovered Listeria monocytogenes. Reports indicate that 10 people in 8 states have been infected.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause fever, body aches, nausea, and diarrhea. Severe cases that spread to the nervous system can cause headaches, confusion, loss of balance, or worse. Most healthy people do not become seriously ill, but pregnant women, young children, and immunocompromised individuals can be at heightened risk of severe complications.
