Although the numbers vary slightly by year, Michigan consistently ranks in the top five – often the top 2 or 3 – in the number of recreational boats each year.  It’s easy to see why, with four of the five Great Lakes forming our coastline and thousands of inland waterways ensuring you are never more than 6 miles away from a body of water.

As the temperature rises and the waterways melt, the urge to get the boat into the water is compelling.  But before you cruise the lake or float down the river, take the necessary time to ensure the safety of everyone on board.

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the top five contributing factors in boating incidents are:

  • Operator inattention
  • Improper lookout
  • Operator inexperience
  • Machinery failure
  • Alcohol use

Being sober, using a life jacket, and checking your equipment before each trip are essential steps to avoiding a tragedy.
