Powdered baby formulas sold by Abbott Nutrition under the Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare labels are being recalled after a bacterial infection was linked to illness in four infants. The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to purchase or use the formulas produced in the company’s Sturgis, Michigan facility, and has announced an investigation of the circumstances around the potential contamination. So far, the recalled products have been linked to four illnesses, including one death possibly linked to the bacteria.
According to the FDA, the formula may be contaminated with Cronobacter sakazakii and Salmonella newport bacteria.
Powdered formula is widely used as a supplement to, and in some cases the sole source of, nutrition for newborns and infants. It is estimated that over 3 million Americans used Similac products in 2020.
