As we enter the peak summer months, the National Weather Service is calling for a prolonged period of intense heat for most of the country. Dangerously high temps can cause serious safety issues. And with people eager to get out and about following pandemic stay-at-home orders, it’s important to remember a few important tips to avoid illness, injury, or death.

  • Stay hydrated
  • Never leave anyone, especially children, alone in a vehicle
  • Avoid strenuous work or exercise during the hottest parts of the day
  • If you must work, take frequent breaks
  • Wear protective clothing, eye wear, and sunscreen

For a more complete list, check out the CDC webpage and other resources. Heat-related injuries are no joke – an average of 600 people die in the US each year as a result of heatstroke and other factors. An extended heatwave in Europe in 2003 killed at least 30,000 people, including 14,000 in France. Unfortunately, heat-related injuries target the most vulnerable populations, including the young, the elderly, and the poor.

As the temperatures climb, be sure to take a few moments to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones.
