Three people have died after a Sunday night wrong-way car accident turned deadly. George Tissen, age 54, was driving a 2002 Ford Ranger when he crossed the median and traveled about 300 yards in the Westbound lane. His vehicle collided with a 2007 Ford Taurus in the middle lane. Police suspect that Tissen experienced a medical event as witnesses report that he appeared to be slumped over the wheel at the time of the accident.
Sheriffs report that an 80-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman died of their injuries from the accident. One of the victims was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Two additional people were critically injured during the accident, including the woman's husband who was driving the Ford Taurus that Tissen collided with. The accident closed down I-96 for several hours going in both directions on Sunday night.
According to officlals, alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor in the accident. An autopsy of Tissen's body is planned. The people in the Ford Taurus were from the Grand Rapids area of Wyoming, MI. The accident occured about 45 miles Northwest of Detroit.
