Students at Williamston High School were stunned to hear about the sudden death of Gabe Corbett on Thursday. Gabe, age 14, died after a partial wall collapsed on him in the school gym on late Wednesday afternoon. School officials allege that he was either climbing on the wall or doing a pull-up on it when it gave way. Word quickly spread amongst the students on Facebook, and they planned to wear all black on Thursday in his memory.
The tragedy has shaken the small and close-knit community. Students were allowed to leave class early on Thursday to meet with counselors or hang out with their peers in the library to remember Gabe. School officials say that the students are coping as best as can be expected.
In addition to wearing all black, the students also created a memory wall for Gabe and posted pictures, paintings, and letters. Gabe was a high school football player, and his jersey number was also taped to a wall between a pair of angel wings with the handwritten words: "lost a hornet, gained an angel".
Corbett’s death was the second accident occuring at Williamston HS this month. Williamston High School senior Derik Jorgensen crashed into a tree on Oct. 14 around 4:30 a.m. while driving southbound on Zimmer Road in Williamston Township. School officials are investigating whether there were structural problems in the gym and an autopsy has been ordered.
