As the snow flies this winter and the roads become slicker, it is easy to forget how dangerous these combined conditions can be for driving. This became a reality for many drivers this past Saturday in the mid-Michigan area. In fact, according to Eaton County dispatchers, police responded to about 40 reports of vehicles in ditches between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. alone. Similarly, Clinton County reported at least five accidents during the evening hours, as the snow continued to fall and create hazardous road conditions.

While there were no reports of major injuries as a result of any of the accidents on Saturday, it is always best to drive safely and cautiously during the winter months. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, motorists can ensure their safety, as well as the safety of other drivers, by abiding by the following winter driving tips:

  • Be cautious of bridges that may be icy even when it appears that the bridge is dry. "Black ice" is easy to miss.
  • Always wear your safety belt and be sure all passengers, including infants in car seats, are properly buckled up.
  • Don’t text or talk on your cell phone while driving.
  • Slow down when visibility is low or when road conditions are icy or snowy.
  • Accelerate and brake slowly and avoid abrupt steering maneuvers.
  • Don’t pump anti-lock brakes.
  • Make sure your windshield is clear or ice and snow before you start driving. "Peep hole" driving is unsafe for you and for other drivers.
