The Diocese of Lansing has recently revealed that 17 priests have been accused of sexually assaulting minors since its inception in 1937.  In all, 155 survivors have come forward to report their sexual abuse at the hands of 69 clergy members.  The abuse occurred across 10 counties and 74 parishes.  Almost all of these incidents occurred between 1960-2000, with only one incident reported after 2000.  In all, 73 allegations were made against 17 priests, and 82 allegations were made against 52 other clergy members.

The effects of sexual abuse are only just being understood.  The physical, mental, and emotional effects of sexual abuse are greater than what most can imagine.  Survivors often find themselves in need of medical care, including physical treatment, therapy, counseling, medication, and more.  This can place a heavy financial burden on those already attempting to recover from such a heinous experience.

In 2010, attorney David Mittleman of Grewal Law helped a survivor of clergy abuse obtain a settlement of $225,000.  In 2018, Grewal Law represented 111 of the 333 survivors in the lawsuit against Michigan State University, which led to the largest settlement against a university for a claim involving sexual assault.
