Today represents the kickoff of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You’re sure to see more pink this month in support of breast cancer research, even in unexpected places like NFL players’ gear. However, actors and firefighters are also helping to promote awareness and raise funds for research by wearing pink shirts and other clothing. This October is particularly special, as this year represents the 25th year of the "pink" movement.

There are ways that you can fight breast cancer, too. First, you could obviously wear the color of the month by purchasing pink merchandise, where a portion of the funds go towards breast cancer research. You could also go for a run, as there are plenty of 5 or 10k races with fundraising goals that all go towards research. There are also other events across the country to raise money for breast cancer research, such as golf outings. Finally, do something for yourself–get a mammogram if you’re a woman age 35 or over. Also, if you have a family history of breast cancer, ask for genetic testing. A blood test can check for changes in the genes that may increase your risk of breast or ovarian cancers.

I hope you will get involved this month in promoting breast cancer awareness, research, and prevention. The American Cancer Society estimates that:

  • About 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
  • About 57,650 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).
  • About 39,520 women will die from breast cancer.

Please do what you can to end this deadly disease that affects so many.
