The timing couldn’t be worse: yesterday Fisher Price recalled several infant and toddler toys, affecting millions of items sold between 1997 and 2010. The recall was prompted by 24 reported injuries of infants and toddlers. In fact, amongst the most serious injuries were 10 cases in which children ran into the ignition key on Fisher Price Tricycles and suffered from genital bleeding. With the holidays right around the corner, parents and grandparents will be disappointed to know that Fisher Price is recalling a total of 10 million toys.
14 additional reported injuries involved the pegs used for storage on Fisher Price highchairs. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission spokeswoman, Inez Tanenbaum, some infants and toddlers have fallen on the pegs and have required stitches for their injuries. In addition to the recalls of these products, Fisher Price also announced the recall of the inflatable ball from the Soft Baby Gym as well as a recall of the purple and green cars sold with the Wheelies Stand N’ Play Rampway Sets because of a choking hazard.
For many parents, Fisher Price is the trusted name in baby toys and other items. The recall came as a shock, particularly after the The Toy Insider’s Hot 20 Toys for holidays picked the Stand N’ Play Rampway Sets as one of its top toys. Sadly, toy manufacturers still haven’t shaped up even after the massive recalls a few years ago of lead-laced toys imported from China. It’s a wonder children make it to adulthood any longer.
