Famed Geologist’s Donation to Hospital Makes Life-Saving Trauma Room Possible

New Trauma Room a Life Saver

Patients in Kelowna, British Colombia have a better chance of survival thanks to a new room in the local hospital dedicated to handling traumatic injuries and illnesses.  Thanks to a hearty donation from the Charles Fipke Foundation, the new trauma room was built in the Kelowna General Hospital with state-of-the-art equipment that’s helping doctors to treat those patients on the verge of dying.  The trauma room has been operating since mid-May this year.

Top of the Line Equipment Makes “Instant Medical Miracles” a Reality

The $1 million donation from the Charles Fipke Foundation has made it possible for the hospital to outfit the trauma room with the latest in medical technology, including a portable digital x-ray machine that can deliver full x-rays in moments; a dedicated ultrasound machine; full video capabilities so doctors can train medical residents on what is done to patients’ bodies and live feedback of what is going on in a patient’s body; and a machine to treat hypothermic patients, as well as a host of other high-tech equipment.  The trauma room is the third in the hospital and treats an average of 4-5 seriously ill patients per day.

Charles Fipke, Well-Known Geologist and Philanthropist

Charles Fipke is well known in Canada for his work as a geologist.  He discovered the Ekati diamond mine in the Northwest Territories in the late 1990s.  He said he was inspired to donate to the hospital because he recognizes the need for the best level of health care and also wants medical residents to learn from doctors using the best medical equipment.  When he asked what he could do to help the hospital two years ago, the plan for the additional trauma room was launched.  The space will surely help those the most with dire needs for care.
