In a joint statement, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the recall of 447,000 Dorel baby carriers after receiving 77 complaints of babies falling out of the carriers with three babies sustaining injuries. According to the joint statement, the carrying handle on the carriers is not bolted securely and can come loose, and potentially cause an infant riding in the unit to fall out.
The carrier also functions as a car seat and a stroller. As the CPSC stated, the problem has only occured when consumers used the carrying feature, because of the issue with the carrying handle. Overall, two of the three infants reported as sustaining injury after falling from a carrier have bumps and bruises. However, one of the three infants also sustained a head injury.
Brands that used the Dorel manufactured carrier include Cosco, Safety 1st, Eddie Bauer, and Disney and were sold at most major department stores between January 2008 and December 2009. The Dorel company is offering repair kits to consumers, which includes new bolts to secure the carrying handle properly.
