Toyota’s reputation for safety took a definite nosedive in 2009. The loss in faith is not without merit, however. Toyota led all automakers in recalls during the last calendar year, with a whopping 4.87 million vehicles getting recalled. In total, there were 15.2 million vehicles recalled in 2009, so Toyota’s share of vehicle recalls was an astounding 32% – not the type of market share Toyota was hoping for.
The list of problems leading to the nine major recalls included: sudden acceleration problems, brake malfunction, rusting Toyota Tundra frames, and engine stalls.
This is the first time ever that Toyota has suffered the most safety oriented vehicle recalls in a single year compared to other automakers.
