Sam’s Club Chicken Caesar Salad Kits Recalled Over Listeria

Michigan Consumers Beware: Sam’s Club Supplier Recalling Pre-cooked Chicken Caesar Salad Kits

After receiving two confirmations from Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development workers of contaminated pre-cooked chicken Caesar salad kits sold at Sam’s Club, the big box giant’s supplier is recalling the product.  APPA Fine Foods, which supplies most of the products sold at Sam’s Club, is recalling over 90,000 pre-cooked chicken Caesar salads because they may contain listeria monocytogenes.

Important Information on Recall: Affected Lots of Salad

11 oz. clear plastic containers and 6.5 lb. boxes with the establishment number “P-21030” inside the USDA mark of inspection are being recalled. The recalled boxes are labeled “APPA Fine Foods/Sam’s Club Daily Chef CHICKEN CAESAR SALAD KIT”.  The products also have “use-by” dates up to September 17.  It is important that you discard the contaminated products immediately.

Listeria Monocytogenes Linked to Stiff Neck, Gastrointestinal Upset Among Other Symptoms

Listeria monocytogenes is the bacteria that causes the Listeriosis infection.  In an individual contaminated with listeria common symptoms include fever, muscle ache, gastrointestinal upset such as diarrhea or nausea.  More severe symptoms include stiff neck, loss of balance, confusion or convulsions.  Those with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, the elderly and infants are especially at risk of becoming seriously ill from listeria.  APPA says it has received no notices of illness from consuming the contaminated salads, but it is important to seek medical attention immediately if you begin to experience flu like symptoms after consumption.  Listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics, but pregnant women are especially at risk and could experience miscarriage, preterm delivery or stillbirth if left untreated.
