The Catholic Diocese of Lansing concluded an internal investigation finding that allegations that former Lansing Bishop James Sullivan molested two young boys in the 1960’s “appeared to be true.” Bishop died in 2006.

Sullivan was the auxiliary bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Lansing from 1972-1985. Thereafter he was bishop in Fargo, North Dakota from 1985-2002.

Two survivors bravely shared their experience with the Catholic Church to assist in its investigation. They were between the ages of 11 and 12 when they were molested by Sullivan at the Church of the Resurrection Parish in Lansing, where Sullivan lived at the time.

One assault, which took place in 1964 included inappropriate touching and “uninvited sexualized conversations.” Sullivan abused his victim for two years. Sullivan inappropriately touched another victim in 1966.

The Diocese of Lansing and Fargo say they are unaware of any further claims of abuse against Sullivan. Sullivan’s name will be added to both dioceses lists of clergy with credible claims of sexual misconduct involving a minor.
