In June 2007, eight-year-old Shelbey Bomkamp underwent a procedure to have her spleen removed at St. Mary’s Hospital, in Madison, Wisconsin. Court documents stated that Dr. Leonard Go used a blender-like device to remove her spleen causing internal injuries. As a result, Shelbey now has permanent brain injuries and can no longer speak. She requires round the clock care and a feeding tube.
Dr. Go stated that he had never used the device before and did not inform Shelbey’s parents that he would be using it during her procedure. The $17.3 million settlement is the largest settlement ever awarded in Dane County.
