Thanks to a $500,000 gift from the Dart Foundation, Sparrow Hospital recently announced the opening of The William and Claire Dart Stroke Center. The Stroke Center, located in Sparrow Hospital’s neuro-intensive unit, utilizes advanced equipment, expert physicians, and cutting-edge stroke care that will help stroke victims survive and thrive after suffering a stroke.

The generous contribution coincides with National Stroke Awareness Month, which is held every year during the month of May. Ariane Dart, the daughter-in-law of William and Claire Dart, represented the family at the special dedication of the new Stroke Center. Currently, the Sparrow Neurosciences Center consists of a partnership between Sparrow, Lansing Neurosurgical Associates, and Michigan State University HealthTeam. The William and Claire Dart Stroke Center will now be part of this partnership, helping to provide the best in research, surgery, and patient care.

Sparrow Hospital was also awarded advanced certification as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, a non-profit organization that provides certification programs for health care organizations.

If you or someone you know has a stroke, you can save valuable time by knowing the “FAST” method of identifying the symptoms of a stroke:

F=Face, ask the person to smile. If one side of the face appears crooked or drooping, this person may be having a stroke.

A=Arms, ask the person to lift one or both of their arms in the air. If they have a difficult time with lifting one or both of their arms, this is a sign that they could be having a stroke.

S=Speech, ask the person to speak. If their words are slurred or they are unable to speak, they might be having a stroke.

T=Time. If any of the above symptoms are present, call 911 immediately.

Remember, every second counts since a stroke is a “brain attack” that kills brain cells for every second without treatment.
