National officials are planning a massive coordinated effort to have a drug disposal day on September 25, 2010. Unused prescription drugs pose numerous dangers if not disposed of properly. Left in the cabinet, these unused drugs can be found and taken by young children. Thrown in the trash, they are left for anyone who might rummage through trash. Obviously, taking prescription drugs that are not prescribed for you is extremely dangerous.
Perhaps even the most bizarre problem with unused prescription drugs is being discovered in the Michigan waterways. Prescription drugs that are thrown away are making their way into Michigan’s drinking water.
With the proper way to dispose of prescription drugs becoming a larger problem, Michigan pharmacists held a special event on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, both to collect drugs to be incinerated and to educate the public. Officials from the DNR have indicated that they’ve detected levels in drinking water and surface water and waste water. While the levels are not enough to raise public health concerns, they are feminizing the male fish in Michigan’s waterways.
For those who are not able to attend the drug disposal efforts, a spokesperson from the Michigan Pharmacists Association recommends soaking medicine in water to dissolve them and then mixing that solution in kitty litter.
