“Fashion Police” Star Joan Rivers in Critical Condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital

The snarky star of the E! show Fashion Police, Joan Rivers, is on life support and in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital after she apparently stopped breathing during a routine throat surgery.  Doctors began to bring her out of a medically induced coma on Sunday and expect to assess her brain function soon.  They are concerned that the part of the brain responsible for motor skills is severely damaged, which would leave her in a wheelchair or in a vegetative state.  However, there has been an outpouring of support for the comedian, with fans wishing her well and sending messages of support to her daughter.  The latest episode of her show, which was set to be filmed during New York Fashion Week, was canceled and the show will not continue until further notice.

Comedian Joked of Her Death Just Days Before Tragedy

Ironically, Joan did a stand up comedy performance in NYC in which she joked about her demise just days prior to the incident that landed her at Mount Sinai Hospital.  Onlookers at the performance say she appeared healthy and energetic and showed no signs of an impending death.  Other reports have suggested that her family is considering a medical malpractice lawsuit against the clinic that performed her throat surgery.  Apparently, the throat surgery was a routine operation on her vocal cords on August 28.  The family says that they are “keeping their fingers crossed” for her recovery, although she remains on life support.  Although the waking up process from the coma started Sunday, it will take until today for her to fully regain consciousness.

Fashion Week Co-hosts Take to Twitter and God for Star

Joan’s Fashion Police co-hosts, Giuliana Rancic and Kelly Osbourne, have both taken to Twitter to post their well wishes and prayers for her recovery.  Osbourne posted: “4 the first time in years I got down on my knees & prayed tonight! I encourage U 2 do the same!”  Osbourne has also called Joan “an honorary grandmother”. Other celebrities have also posted to Twitter, with actress Lena Dunham stating: “All love and healing wishes to Her Majesty Joan Rivers- being ripped a new one by you is an honor to be treasured.”
