At approximately 5am on Sunday March 1, 2009, Joseph Kratz was riding his ATV across Ore Lake when the ice gave way, causing him to be submerged in the icey water. A resident who lived on the lake called the Hamburg Township Police Department when they saw the ATV break through the frozen lake approximately 30 yards from the boat dock. Mr. Kratz was pulled from the water just after 6am and was rushed to the University of Michigan Medical Center; unfortunately they were unable to revive him.

Please be careful when riding an ATV, snowmobile, or any other recreational vehicle, across the ice this winter. Although it may appear safe for travel, there can be portions of ice that are capable of supporting a person but not suitable for supporting the additional weight of a vehicle. Also, try not to travel alone, or at least let someone know you are crossing an icey lake so they can make sure you made it across the frozen lake safely.
