Spring has finally arrived, meaning we can enjoy snow-free roads for at least a few months.  For many people, this is an opportunity to wash a winter’s worth of salt and grime from their vehicles.  And while that showroom shine makes your car look great, a thorough cleaning can actually make your car safer.

The NHTSA has issued an advisory reminding motorists to wash their cars to help remove salt and other corrosive chemical buildup.  Corrosive materials can cause your braking system to deteriorate and fail, which could lead to a crash.  Model year 2007 and earlier vehicles are particularly at risk.

Of course, you should regularly monitor and maintain your vehicle, including the braking system.  But if you need some added incentive to hit the car wash, remember that it could help prevent a serious accident.
