There is a bi-partisan effort to guarantee that folks attending religious services are given the opportunity to enjoy it without interruption. In response to a gay rights protest that was waged inside of a church near Lansing where protesters screamed during the service, pulled a fire alarm, and tossed fliers, state legislators are proposing a bill that would impose a $5,000 penalty for interrupting a church service.
The hope is that the discourse between gay rights advocates and religiously affiliated individuals who oppose gay rights will remain in public forums, which could foster an exchange of ideas or at the very least prevent the interruption of only one set of ideas, even between individuals who might initially see each other as total opposites.
