Williamston Township, MI—a driver who struck and killed a bicyclist on Thursday, March 11 apparently fell asleep at the wheel, authorities recently said.  The bicyclist was 23-year-old Eliyah Coats, who was pronounced dead at the scene.  He was not wearing a helmet.

Authorities reported that Coats was riding west on Grand River Avenue near Meridian Road when the crash occurred at about 6:20 a.m.  Shawn Reeves, a 39-year-old Williamston man, drove the pickup that struck Coats.  Reeves, who was also heading west, fell asleep at the wheel, swerved and then drifted onto the shoulder where Coats was riding his bicycle.

The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.  It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.
