Inspired by the recently passed “Bradley Bills” in Delaware, Michigan legislators recently passed legislation to protect patients—old and young alike—in the state. The bipartisan, three-package bill passed on Thursday by an overwhelming majority and calls for the permanent revocation of a medical license for someone convicted of criminal sexual conduct in the first, second, or third degrees.
Furthermore, the legislation will cover doctors, nurses, and dentists practicing in Michigan. Prior to the passage of the bill, medical doctors who lost their licenses after a criminal sexual conduct conviction were allowed to reapply for their licenses after five years.
Supporters of the bill are hopeful that the new law will protect people from medical professionals who have previously victimized their patients.
