Over 35,000 Without Power After Ice Storm Wallops Mid-Michigan
Even if you’re not one of the 35,000 without power, you’re likely well aware of the current state of affairs in the Mid-Michigan area. After an ice storm walloped the area on Saturday night, tree branches toppled from the weight of the ice coating their branches, knocking down power lines and leaving thousands of Michiganders without power. The Board of Water and Light and Consumers Energy estimates that it may be Friday or Saturday until power is restored, making it a chilly holiday season for many.
Consumers Energy Calls in Hundreds of Extra Workers
Consumers Energy has called in 300 extra workers from other states to help with power restoration. However, it will likely be until December 28 before most get their power back. This has left many consumers frustrated and angry over the extended amount of time without power, and their lack of power to fix the situation. Board of Water and Light urges customers to please be patient and to keep trying if they have called. In the meantime, consumers can do their part to keep the city and the surrounding areas safe.
Officials Ask for Public’s Help
Consumers can help everyone stay safe by staying off the roads unless absolutely necessary so crews can salt the roads. Also, be careful and don’t use gas ranges or gas-powered heaters as they can emit toxic fumes. There are also warming centers around the area, where you can go to warm up, get a hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate to drink, and charge up your cellphone. Temperatures are expected to drop to the mid-20s tonight, although there is no more ice in the forecast. Whatever you decide to do, remember to keep safe, warm, and fed.
