Homeowners in Florida have complained that Chinese drywall is the culprit for stinking up their homes and corroding their pipes. Finally, those suspicisions are proven correct. According to an Environmental Protection Agency report (pdf), the culpable drywall imported from China does contain Sulfur, which explains the rotten egg smell. In addition to the Sulfur, the EPA also found that Chinese drywall also contains strontium, a metallic element, at ten times the level of domestically-produced drywall.
Senator Bill Nelson from Florida and Senator Mary Landrieu from Louisiana requested that the EPA test the Chinese drywall after hundreds of consumers, mainly from Florida, complained of their new homes stinking of rotten eggs and that metals in their homes were inexplicably corroding. Many of those homeowners were forced to move and were forced to rip their homes to shreds to remove the suspected drywall.
Senator Nelson is now calling on the EPA to set standards for states to test air quality inside the homes constructed with imported drywall. Furthermore, both senators have also called for a nationwide investigation and a ban on Chinese-made drywall.
