Almost a year-to-date since the Costa Concordia luxury cruise ship capsized, Carnival Cruises is facing yet another catastrophe. Apparently, another Carnival-owned cruise ship, the Carnival Triumph, is adrift 150 miles off of Southern Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula after the ship's engine room caught on fire on Sunday.
Thankfully none of the passengers or crew were injured and the fire was put out. The Coast Guard has been notified of the problem and in the meantime, another Carnival Cruise ship delivered food and beverages to the stranded passengers. A tugboat is expected to drag the ship to its destination at the Mexican Port of Progreso where it was originally slated to land on Wednesday afternoon.
In January last year, the Costa Concordia, a cruise ship owned by Carnival Cruise lines, capsized off the coast off the Tuscan island of Giglio in Italy and killed 32 people. Italian investigators announced last month that they were investigating the vessel owner's potential liability for the shipwreck. Carnival Cruises announced that all passengers on the Carnival Triumph will receive a refund and a cruise credit equal to the cost of the voyage. Subsequent cruises to take place on the Carnival Triumph this week were canceled.
