Just a few days ago, reports emerged of a meningitis outbreak that had spread into many parts of the U.S. The outbreak was linked to contaminated steroid pain injections manufactured by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts. Since those initial reports, there were also several Michiganders affected by the same strain of meningitis. But more recent news is even more shocking, with two Michiganders dying as a result of meningitis.

A 67-year-old woman is one of the victims among those that were affected by a steroid pain injection contaminated with meningitis. Lilian Cary apparently died after she was given an epidural shot from Michigan Pain Specialists clinic in Brighton. Cary was hospitalized on September 21 after she began to show signs of meningitis but suffered a basilar artery stroke that left her clinically brain dead. Her husband and daughter made the decision to remove her from life support.

Nationwide, 105 cases of meningitis have been reported with eight deaths in nine states. The four clinics in Michigan that received the contaminated steroid pain injections include Michigan Pain Specialists in Brighton, Michigan Neurosurgical Institute of Grand Blanc, Neuromuscular & Rehabilitation in Traverse City and Southeast Michigan Surgical Hospital in Warren.
