Don't grab a glass of chocolate milk this weekend–that is, if it's Nesquik. Nestle is recalling batches of its Nesquik chocolate powder after Omya Inc. issued a recall of its calcium carbonate, a Nesquik ingredient, because of concerns over salmonella contamination.
Nesquik containers bearing the expiration date of October 2014 should be discarded. Nestle says that no adverse effects have been reported but that salmonella bacteria can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, and in more vulnerable groups such as the very young or elderly, more severe symptoms and even death.
Nestle also says that Nesquik products can be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers can also call Nestle Consumer Services at 800-628-7679 with questions or concerns. Affected lots include:
- 10.9-ounce packages with UPC 0 28000 67990 3 2278574810;
- 21.8-ounce packages with UPC 0 28000 68090 9 2278574810, 2278574820, 2279574810, 2279574820, 2284574820, 2284574830, 2285574810, 2285574820, 2287574820, 2289574810, and 2289574820; and
- 40.7-ounce packages with UPC 0 28000 68230 9 2282574810 and 2282574820.
Omya is a major supplier of calcium carbonate worldwide with 12 plants in North America, seven of which are in the U.S. Omya calcium carbonate is made from ground limestone and is put in foods such as chewing gum and nutritional supplements.
