A few days ago I wrote about a Carnival Cruise ship stranded near the southern tip of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. That ship, the Carnival Triumph, was originally slated to be towed by a tug boat to the Mexican Port of Progreso by today but those plans were scrapped after the boat drifted farther away while waiting.
Passengers on the ship complained of overflowing toilets and scarce food, with long waits for what food there was left on the ship. Those reports come even after another Carnival Cruise ship came to deliver food and water to the stranded Triumph just a few days ago. The boat was towed by tug boat yesterday to Mobile, Alabama but the passengers, needless to say, are extremely upset. Passengers have been texting and tweeting about feces on the floor of the ship, overflowing toilets, no air conditioning and general disgust over the horrific conditions.
Nevertheless, Carnival Cruise Lines President and Chief Executive Gerry Cahill maintains that all of the 23 bathrooms on the ship are operational and that there are additional toilets in the guest cabins. However, he did admit that conditions on the boat were challenging and that the company is very, very upset over the debacle. The company has apparently arranged 1,500 hotel rooms in Mobile and New Orleans for the passengers, as well as 20 charter flights, buses, and other transportation back to their homes.
