At least 2 major food recalls have made headlines in the last week, calling into question food quality and inspection standards.
On May 31, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a recall of almost 32,000 pounds (16 tons) of ready-to-eat chicken produced by Perdue Simply Smart Organics, due to contamination by bone material. According to the press release, the health risk is designated as “high.” The chicken products were produced on March 21 and include numerous different types of prepared chicken. Also on May 31, the USDA announced that Johnsonville was recalling nearly 100,000 pounds of jalapeno cheddar smoked sausage contaminated with hard green plastic. This recall is another Class I recall with a designated “high” risk. More information can be found here.
Class I recalls are considered an “urgent threat level.”
Product recalls are surprisingly common. According to at least one source, there is an average of almost 6 recalls PER DAY on ingestible or topical products.
