Scottish Teen Dies After Participating in Ice Bucket Challenge

If you’ve been online at all, you are likely familiar with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which has gone viral on social media sites.  If you’ve been living under a rock, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was started a unique way to raise awareness of the disease, as well as money, by “challenging” your friends to dump a bucket of ice water on their head after you’ve completed the task.  You can learn more about it at the ALS website.  Sadly, the Ice Bucket Challenge resulted in tragedy after a Scottish teen jumped into a nearby quarry in a twist on the original ALS challenge.

Nearby Quarry Spells Trouble for Scottish Teens

According to reports, Cameron Lancaster, age 18, of Scotland died when he decided to jump into a nearby quarry.  Apparently, teens in Scotland have put a new spin on the ice bucket challenge by “tombstoning” into the Preston Hill Quarry.  Tombstoning is when an individual jumps into a body of water from an elevated point while remaining prostrate or stiff like someone in a tombstone.  The craze has swept many places in the UK and Europe, and has been the center of controversy because of several deaths.  Cameron’s body remained under water at the quarry for four hours before police were able to retrieve it.  Additional details surrounding the incident are still unclear and officials are working to sort out the circumstances.

Family Stunned by Teen’s Death, Remembers His Impact on All Who Knew Him

Cameron’s family is understandably stunned by the young man’s death and say that he touched many in his short time here on earth.  They recently stated:

Cameron died in a tragic accident. His death is such a great loss. During his short life, he touched so many people with his friendliness, kindness and thoughtful generosity of spirit. He will be hugely missed by his family and friends. The family are finding it hard to come to terms with this sudden loss and would ask for privacy.

Although teens have always jumped into the quarry, there has been an increase in the number participating because of the link with the Ice Bucket Challenge.  It is truly tragic that a charity event is connected in any way to the death of Cameron.
