Study Identifies Risk Factors in Adolescents for Internet Addiction

Comments Off

A few weeks ago, I wrote on an article concerning Internet addiction. Now it seems that there is further risk factors to look out for in your teenager. In fact, a recent study performed by researchers in Taiwan revealed that kids with certain preexisting psychological conditions are more likely to become addicted to the Internet.

The study, published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, focused on the relationship between psychiatric symptoms and Internet addiction. By studying 2,162 junior high students over a period of two years, the researchers found that ADHD was the greatest predictor for Internet addiction in girls, with hostility as the greatest predictor in boys.

The researchers also argued in their report that Internet addiction is extremely destructive and should be taken seriously. Consequences of Internet addiction in adolescents include poor school performance, broken family and friend relationships, and poor emotional health. The newly discovered risk factors can lend a hand in the detection, prevention and early intervention of Internet addiction.
