Joe Pa Fired Over Lapse in Moral Responsibility

Comments Off

While students at Penn State rioted in the streets in anger, the firing of legendary coach Joe Paterno was the only way for the university to save face amidst the devastating sex abuse scandal that has rocked the sports world. Joe Paterno greeted students outside of his home last night, and told the crowd "pray for the [sexual abuse] victims…we love you".

Sadly, Joe Pa’s legacy will forever be tarnished by this tragedy. The winningest coach in major football history, Paterno found out about his termination on Wednesday night about 15 minutes before the trustees publicly announced the decision in a press conference. Earlier in the day, Paterno had announced his decision to retire at the end of this season. Also relieved of duty was Penn State president Graham Spanier.

Paterno had come under increasing scrutiny for failing to do more to stop Sandusky, who has been charged with molesting eight boys over a 15-year period. Police say Paterno is not the target of a criminal investigation, but that his failure to contact the police about the reported sexual abuse was a lapse in "moral responsibility". In a statement released on Wednesday, Paterno stated: "this is a tragedy. It is one of the greatest sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."
