E.L. Police Taser High School Student During Lunchroom Incident, Student Alleges Injuries

East Lansing High School is a great high school in so many ways, both academically and athletically, and is also known for its arts and diversity…but what happened here? Last Thursday, an ELHS student was tasered by the East Lansing police after an incident that occured outside of the lunchroom.

Dionnedra Reid argues that police used excessive force against her 17-year-old son, Marcus, when they tasered him twice in the chest. She maintains that her son was merely walking his distraught girlfriend out of the school building after she was suspended for truancy. She is particularly concerned that her son was tasered even after he was pinned down to the ground by four police officers. Ultimately, she said that her son suffered several injuries, including a hairline fracture to his wrist, and was treated at a local hospital.

While Reid didn’t witness the incident, she did say that she reviewed the tape on Friday with school officials. In a recently released statement, the school district stated that the police arrested two students and tasered a third because they were resisting arrest when the officers were trying to break up a lunchroom fight. However, both Marcus and his brother Levon maintain that a fight never happened and that the incident really occured because of the rough handling that Marcus’ girlfriend suffered at the hands of the police. The EL police did not wish to talk on camera, and say that the incident is still under investigation.
