Cerebral Palsy is a neurological disorder characterized by lack of muscle coordination, tight muscles, and exaggerated reflexes.  It typically appears in infancy or early childhood and can be caused by trauma, including medical malpractice during labor and delivery.  Approximately 17 million people worldwide are diagnosed with cerebral palsy, and it is estimated that 350 million people know someone who has the condition.

Michigan Teen to Carry Brother to Raise Awareness

Hunter Gandee, 15, embarked today on a hike to bring attention to cerebral palsy.  He’ll be traveling 57 miles from Lambertville to Ann Arbor with his brother Braden on his back.  The Cerebral Palsy Swagger is expected to end Sunday, and it is the family’s second long walk to raise awareness for the disorder.  Last year, Hunter carried Braden from Temperance to Ann Arbor – a distance of 40 miles.  The efforts have led to state- and nationwide coverage of the story and the effects of cerebral palsy.

What Can You Do?

There is currently no cure for cerebral palsy.  However, medical advances continue to improve the lives of people afflicted with the condition.  Many charities support cerebral palsy research, and World CP Day coordinates efforts to assist patients and their families.
