After a $201 million remodel job at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport tragedy struck when a 300-pound sign fell on a family, killing a 10-year-old boy. The accident occurred Friday and involved a flight status sign that toppled on the family returning home to Kansas after a vacation.
According to reports it took nearly half a dozen people to help lift the sign off of the family. The boy, Luke Bresette, was taken to Children's of Alabama Hospital and pronounced dead. His mother was also taken to University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital and is in critical condition with a broken pelvis and two broken ankles. Two other brothers were also injured. Luke's older sister, Anna, tweeted about her family's ordeal and said that it "still felt like a dream".
The mayor of Birmingham said that he has asked the public safety staff to assist the family in their time of need. The incident is also under investigation, although the airport remains open with the area where the sign fell cordoned off. Bystanders say they heard a loud bang and screams around 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Officials say they aren't sure how the sign fell.
