Tomorrow Is World Cerebral Palsy Day!

Wednesday, October 1 is World Cerebral Palsy Day, a day centered on raising awareness for the condition worldwide. Cerebral Palsy is a life-altering neurological disorder that affects movement and posture. It can appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affect you. The most common characteristics are a lack of muscle coordination, stiff or tight muscles and exaggerated reflexes. Cerebral Palsy affects 17 million people worldwide and an additional 350 million people are closely connected to a child or adult who has the condition.  Cerebral Palsy can be caused by medical malpractice when a doctor does not provide appropriate treatment to a mother and her infant either before or during labor and delivery. Lack of oxygen during labor and delivery can not only cause physical injury, but brain damage.

Led by a group of Cerebral Palsy Charities in over 45 countries, World CP day is a “global innovation project” to change the world for people living with the condition. Wear Green tomorrow, October 1, to raise awareness for Cerebral Palsy.

“Change My World in 1 Minute”

One of the highlights of World CP day is the “Invent It” Competition. The program begins by accepting ideas from those with cerebral palsy, their families or supporters.  Individuals have one minute to submit an idea for an invention that would help those with Cerebral Palsy. In 2015, three ideas will be selected for the competition. Researchers and creators, many with cerebral palsy themselves, will submit designs or prototypes for the selected ideas. Last year’s design winners created a “Designer Walker” and a “Spill-Proof Cup.”
