New Pain Med 10x Stronger Than Vicodin Will Hit the Market in 2013

Comments Off

I'm all for eliminating pain, but a recent report about an opiate10 times stronger than Vicodin sounds really dangerous. Pharmaceutical companies are currently in the last stages of development of such a drug–one that's entirely made out of hydrocodone, one of the ingredients in oxycodone. Drug addiction specialists are calling the drug extremely dangerous since it would be the first time that consumers could legally buy hydrocodone in its purest form. Other opiates include heroin, morphine, codeine, and oxycodone.

One brand of the drug will be called "Zohydro" and the manufacturer says that it will be marketed for patients with moderate to severe pain and will have a time-release component. The company plans to put the drug on the market in 2013. Although the pill would be time released, experts still say that people could abuse it and obtain an instant high by crushing the pills. Pharmaceutical companies that plan to manufacture the drug maintain that patients would have to see their doctor every time they wanted a new refill of the drug and would also be closely monitored.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, hydrocodone is the second most abused medicine in the country after oxycodone. Experts hope that doctors will screen patients for a history of addiction before prescribing such a potent medication, particularly since prescription drug abuse caused 15,000 deaths in the U.S. three years ago.
