Marijuana Vaping – Risky New Teen Trend?

You’ve probably heard a lot about “vaping,” the general term for using e-cigarettes and similar devices.  Manufacturers have been trying to position vaping as a safer alternative than actual cigarettes and as a tool to help current smokers quit.  Still, not everyone is convinced vaping is so innocuous.

New Study Investigates Link Between Pot, Vaping

According to a study published in the journal Pediatrics and reported by USA Today, teenagers have started using vaporizer modules to inhale marijuana smoke.  While the study was fairly limited and more research needs to be done, it raises important questions.  Perhaps the most important is whether vaping marijuana is more dangerous than “traditional” marijuana use.  Vaporizer modules and e-cigarettes are typically designed to be used with concentrated liquids, usually containing nicotine.  Because there are no commercially regulated cannabis concentrates, some people fear users will inhale dangerously high concentrations of the drug.

Vaping Controversy Continues

If you’re so inclined, there’s plenty of discussion on both sides of this emerging topic.  The cigarette industry, worried about losing market share, originally opposed e-cigarettes by (ironically) decrying how the health effects of the new products were unknown.   Since then, Big Tobacco has embraced the trend.  Meanwhile, the debate rages on as opponents argue that e-cigs target youngsters with attractive scents, flavors, and colors.  The FDA is struggling to keep up with the rapidly evolving industry.
