When the once-popular DePuy ASR hip implant was removed from the market more than three years ago, one major question faced thousands of patients: Why did so many fail so soon?
DePuy, a Johnson & Johnson company, faces allegations that its ASR hip prostheses were defective, resulting in an alarmingly high – and constantly growing – failure rate for its metal-on-metal implant.
DePuy Hip Replacement Lawsuits
As a result of the allegedly defective DePuy implants, nearly 12,000 individual lawsuits have been filed across the United States. The first of these suits were about to go trial in October of this year, but the parties reached a settlement agreement. In recent weeks, it had been rumored that DePuy had been considering a $3 billion dollar settlement fund to resolve all the pending and future claims.
Stryker Hip Replacements Next?
DePuy isn’t the only medical device manufacturer to face criticism of its metal-on-metal implants. Medical technology giant Stryker is under fire for the Rejuvenate and ABG II hip stems.
