Could the Toyota Corolla Be Next in Slew of Recalls?

Comments Off

It seems as if the problems never cease for Toyota lately. As of Wednesday, the company announced that it’s looking into complaints over power steering problems in one of its most popular compact cars, the Corolla. Amidst a slew of recalls, another recall of Corollas could become a potential reality for Toyota according to top Toyota officials. However, Toyota stated that no decision has been made yet over whether or not to institute another recall as it continues to investigate power steering complaints. The carmaker also stated that potential complaints with the U.S. models of Corollas total less than 100.

Nevertheless, Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda, recently stated that he will not be traveling to Washington, D.C. to appear at the congressional hearings scheduled for next week. Instead, he argues that his U.S.-based executives will handle the hearings while he focuses on improving the company’s reputation with consumers. Recently, Toyota began airing ads on TV apologizing for the problems, as well as publishing ads in U.S. and Japanese newspapers.

Furthermore, President Toyoda also promised a backup safety system in all future Toyota models worldwide, that would override the accelerator if the gas and brake pedals are pressed simultaneously. Overall, sudden acceleration problems are the primary cause of the recall of 8.5 million Toyota vehicles worldwide. Despite these new moves to improve the company’s image, whether or not the television ads or new safety implementations resonant with wary consumers is yet to be seen.
