Banana Boat Recalls Spray Sunscreen After Consumers Burst Into Flames

Comments Off

Earlier this year, I wrote about a man who had a shocking and disturbing incident occur after using Banana Boat spray sunscreen. That man burst into flames after applying the spray sunscreen on just before going outside to use his grill and suffered second degree burns over parts of his body. At the time, Banana Boat said that they would further investigate the incident, but no word was given until more recently when the company said that it was recalling dozens of its products.

Energizer Holdings announced on Friday that it was recalling dozens of its Banana Boat products because of dozens of consumer reports of catching on fire after using the sunscreens. The company said that it believes the problem lies in the dispenser valve on the spray bottle that dispenses more than the typical amount of sunscreen compared to other products in the industry. That leads to a risk of ignition if a consumer comes into contact with fire before the product has fully absorbed into the skin.

In total, a company spokesman said that there have been five reports of consumer burns from using the sunscreen products. The company also says that it has alerted the Food and Drug Administration about the recall. Consumers who purchased the products are being told not to use them. More information is available from the manufacturer at 1-800-SAFESUN.
