Two Injured in Car Accident On Washington Avenue, Semi-Truck Spills Fuel Over Road

Comments Off

Lansing, MI—Two people were injured while driving on Washington Avenue just south of interstate 96 yesterday afternoon around 11:49 a.m. The two cars collided with one another and then proceeded to hit a semi-truck, which ruptured the semi’s 100-gallon fuel tank. City fire officials had to work most of the afternoon to ensure the fully loaded fuel tank didn’t empty into the street and into the Grand River.

Washington Avenue traffic south of Main Street was cleared by officials by 4:30 while city fire officials used “portable dams” and industrial strength powder to prevent the fuel from seeping into the river. However, officials are still uncertain as to how much fuel may have made it into the storm drains.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, however officials speculate that one of the cars ran a red light and struck the second car at Main and Washington, which proceeded to strike the semi, which was hauling two gravel trailers. The drivers of the two cars were transported to Sparrow Hospital with unspecified injuries. Fortunately, the truck driver was uninjured.
