Spring Thaw On The Way, So Are The Cyclists

As temperatures climb and the mountains of snow begin to melt in Michigan, motorists can expect to see more bicyclists. Biking is healthy, green, and cost-effective, and for many it is both a hobby and a major method of point-A-to-point-B transportation. To prepare for sharing the roads, motorists and cyclists alike should refresh their memories about their rights and responsibilities.

It's no surprise that driving a motor vehicle on a public road is a heavily regulated activity. There are countless laws and regulations aimed at keeping people safe. Perhaps the most important guidance, however, is common sense. When driving, remember that you're sharing the road with pedestrians and cyclists. Be courteous and never drive distracted.

Bicyclists need to be aware of their responsibilities, also. They are permitted to travel in a lane of traffic, but as a matter of courtesy (and safety), they should remain as far to the right as practicable. Cyclists should also conform their behavior to traffic laws as much as possible. In order to stay safe, bicyclists should wear protective gear (including and especially a helmet) and wear bright, visible clothing. Cyclists should also avoid traveling while distracted and, when traveling at night, should be properly equipped with lighting.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but the next few weeks should see more and more bicycles hitting the road. If we all do our part, we can keep the roads safe for everyone.
